Winter Devils are recognized

Two All-Region selections, other awards presented for basketball, cheerleading

Clinton High School celebrated the selections of Tay Cook and MK Kelly as varsity boys and girls basketball All-Region selections, as part of Wednesday night's CHS 2015-16 Winter Sports Awards Ceremony in the high school auditorium.

Cook also was named the varsity boys basketball Most Valuable Player, and is a record-holder having scored more than 1,200 points in his four years as a varsity Red Devil (1,236). Derrick Mitchell won the varsity boys Sportsmanship Award. Vilo Boyd received the JV boys Hustler Award.

De'Naisha Floyd received the Varsity girls Most Valuable Player Award, and Ti'Cambrius Copeland was Sportsmanship winner. Sara Olivia Stephens received the JV girls Hustler Award.

For varsity cheerleading, Jordan Cook was the recipient of the Caroline Sease Award, and Olivia Moore was Varsity cheerleading's Most Valuable Player. Student-athletes on the four basketball teams, Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleading squads were honored by their coaches,

Speaking to Coach Chris Wofford, who is stepping down as Varsity girls basketball coach, senior Izzy Worley said on the team's behalf, "You made us realize excellence can be achieved." CHS Athletics Director Dr. David Barnes gave Wofford a recognition plaque, in honor Wofford's 25 years of coaching in Clinton athletics (CHS & Martha Dendy Middle School). Wofford also coaches football and golf.

Barnes also had a special recognition for Varsity boys basketball coach Todd Frazier, who also is stepping down as he battles a health issue, and Barnes said the plaque will be presented to Frazier when he is able to attend a Red Devil event. The March 2 winter sports awards event was sponsored by the Clinton High School Athletic Booster Club, one of three awards programs the organization sponsors each year.

CHS winter sports coaches are: Mindy Webb, JV cheerleading; Christine Corley, Varsity cheerleading; Jo Webb, JV girls basketball; Eddie Romines, JV boys basketball; Chris Wofford, Varsity girls basketball; and Tosh Corley, Varsity boys basketball. The coaching staff thanked the athletic trainers, statisticians, managers, announcers, CHS faculty and administration, and Red Devil parents and families for their help in the 2015-16 winter season.
