STAT LINE - Win one for the seniors

Clinton High varsity boys basketball breaks through against Laurens
We haven't won here in a long, long time." - Clinton varsity boys basketball head coach Eddie Romines

UPDATED WITH STAT LINE: An emotional win was earned Friday night by the Clinton High varsity boys basketball team.

"My seniors have never won here," Red Devil head coach Eddie Romines said after a thrilling 49-46 win by the senior-dominated Clinton team over a young and scrappy Raiders squad.

"This is a huge confidence builder. We have set a lot of goals. Our first one was win the first game - we did that (over Greenville Tech Charter School). Next is win the County Championship. You have to win here to do that." Laurens comes to Clinton's gym Tuesday night. It will be a "Black Out Cancer" game for the home-standing Red Devils.

Victory for the 2-0 Red Devils came down to the final 51 seconds with the Raiders in control by one point. Laurens missed a game-tying shot with 5 seconds on the clock, and Red Devil senior Jalen Carter executed a perfect straight-up snag of the last-ditch shot as it came down short of the basket. Laurens' last gasp came about because Tymori Tribble hit two free throws (two shot bonus) with 14 seconds left to play. Vilo Boyd snagged a Laurens rebound and was fouled, hitting both free throws (another two shot bonus) with 5 seconds to play.

"We brought Vilo Boyd in, and he played 23 seconds. He hit the biggest shots of his life," Romines said. "He got a couple rebounds, a block, hit those two free throws and I think he might have tipped that last shot.

"Laurens is a great team. We got behind, we just had to keep scraping."

Tribble gave Clinton a one-point lead, 44-43, with 2:32 left to play when he hit two free throws (on a 1-and-1). Laurens took the lead back with 51 seconds left, and time was called for an injury. Laurens had a 6 point lead to start the 4th quarter. Then, Tribble hit a layup with 6 minutes left to play, and Donte Reeder canned a 3-point shot with 5 minutes left to play and - just like that - the Laurens lead was down to one, 43-42, setting up the frantic end to the fourth quarter.

"We had some turnovers, we took some 3s that maybe weren't so good," Romines said. "We realized we had to take it to the basket. We finally realized Laurens was in foul trouble." Triible scored 14 points for Clinton, followed by Reeder with 11 and Tashymen Boyd with 10. Josh Greene scored 13 points for Laurens.

Clinton sprinted to a 12-5 first quarter lead, but it wasn't to last. The Red Devils and Raiders were tied at 28 at halftime.

Laurens won in girls action, 64-22.
