Pope Joins Football Coaching Staff

Kyle Pope has joined the Presbyterian College football staff as defensive line coach, head coach Harold Nichols announced this week. Pope spent last season as the defensive line coach at Holmes Community College in Goodman, Miss.

"We are very excited about Kyle Pope joining our staff,” Nichols said. “He will bring great energy and will be an excellent teacher to our student-athletes. Please welcome Kyle to our PC family."

Pope comes to PC after a short stint at the University of West Alabama, where he coached outside linebackers and standup defensive ends at the bandit position.

“I’m excited to join the Presbyterian College staff under Coach (Harold) Nichols,” Pope said. “I’m thrilled for the opportunity to work at a place like Presbyterian. I can’t wait to get to work with a great group of athletes.”

During his time at both Holmes and West Alabama, Pope was responsible for a number of different tasks on defense side of the ball, while also assisting with special teams at both stops. His duties included recruiting, breaking down opponents’ film and preparing practice plans, while working to develop his student-athletes.

Prior to joining the staff at Holmes in July 2015, Pope was a strength and conditioning intern at his alma mater, Jacksonville State. He prepared workout plans and trained players in both the weight room and on the field.

Pope was a three-year letterwinner in four seasons as a linebacker for the Gamecocks from 2011-14. He played in 26 games over his final two seasons in Jacksonville, as JSU made FCS Playoff appearances in both years. The Gamecocks advanced quarterfinals in 2013 with wins over Samford and McNeese State, before earning a first-round bye as the No. 3 seed in 2014.

The native of Sylacauga, Ala. comes from a strong athletic family. His twin brother, Kelsey, was a two-time All-SoCon selection as a wide receiver at Samford. His cousin is NBA standout Gerald Wallace, who has spent time with the Kings, Bobcats, Trail Blazers, Nets and Celtics in 14 seasons in the league.

Pope graduated from Jacksonville State in May 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and wellness with a concentration in human performance.
