In extra session, CLINTON WINS, ready for playoffs
UPDATE: Clinton plays at Chester Friday in 1st round of AAA State Playoffs - tickets are $7, kickoff is 7:30 pm. Second place in Region 3, 3A slipped away from the Clinton Red Devils Friday by 1 point. Victory over Woodruff, for the second season in a row, came by 8 in Clinton's first overtime of the 2016 season.
Koko Richey blasted through the Wolverine defense line twice on the first series of OT to put 8 points on the board for Clinton. Woodruff could not answer. Two sacks put Woodruff, which started at the 10, back to 3rd and goal from the 27. A pass completion and a pass incompletion were the final two plays in the regular season for the Wolverines. With the loss, Woodruff gets 4th place in the region. Clinton gets 3rd, behind league-leading Newberry - it could have been 2nd, taking the spot away from Chapman, if Woodruff had scored 23 points or less (in a tie-breaker for the three teams at 3-2 in region play).
With the 32-24 win over Woodruff - Clinton's second in a row and third in its last four games - the Red Devils will head to #2 seeded Chester on Nov. 18 in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs. Newberry gets to play Indian Land at home, Chapman as second seed plays host to a third seed, Camden. Broome and Mid-Carolina will miss the playoffs this season. Clinton is 5-5 overall, Woodruff finishes the regular season at 6-4.
Jay Thomas gives Clinton its first cause to cheer with a TD-stopping interception. Clinton converts a 4th and 2 with a Mark Wise 60-yard sprint to the end zone to take a 7-0 lead. An Elvis Fitz field goal and Wise touchdown run stake Clinton to a 17-0 lead just before halftime. Woodruff hits a scoring pass just before halftime, and hits another on the first play of the 2nd half. After Clinton fails on a fake punt, Woodruff throws for another touchdown, and adds a field goal after Clinton cannot convert a 4th and short. By 6;07 left in the 3rd quarter, Clinton's 17-0 lead has become a 24-17 Woodruff lead.
That would be all the points Woodruff would score.
Clinton gets a 3rd quarter score on a Richey run. The Wolverines miss two field goals in the 4th quarter, but intercept a Clinton pass to the end zone with :11 on the game clock. In overtime, Richey puts the game away with his touchdown run and 2-point conversion run.
"I hate that stretch where we gave up three touchdowns," Clinton football head coach Andrew Webb said. "We needed to hold them under 23 and we gave up 24." That one point means Chapman is the #2 team in Region 3 and Clinton is #3 (Newberry #1, Woodruff #4 - the Wolverines had a 3-game win streak snapped playing at Clinton). It was Senior Night for Red Devil football players, cheerleaders and band members. Other fall sports had their Senior Nights the last games of their regular seasons. It was youth football night, also, and two tackle football rec teams squared off on Richardson Field at halftime. A special dance, The Maureen Tiller (CHS principal), was performed on the field after the game.
