Clinton scores early - and often
Clinton broke out of an offensive funk in a big way Friday against 2A Chesnee, overwhelming the Eagles, 47-12. It snapped a 3-game losing streak for the Red Devils, in the final game before region play.
"These guys are going into the locker room knowing, if they put together four quarters like that, they can play with anybody," Red Devil football head coach Andrew Webb said. "We'll get ready for Chapman, probably the best offensive team we've played this season." The Red Devils travel to Chapman next Friday, in the region opener, followed by Homecomine against Mid-Carolina.
Clinton jumped on top of 3-2 Chesnee with an Aaron Copeland touchdown run and a Jalen Carter scoring pass reception from Charlie Craven. A determined Kris Holmes pounded through the Chesnee defensive front, and the Clinton coaches were telling their players, "If they can't stop it, we keep running it." Clinton came out in a very spirited fashion after losses to Abbeville, Aiken and Greer, which followed a season-starting win over Laurens.
Mark Wise also pounded in a touchdown, staking Clinton to a 20-0 lead. A T'Quan Cromer interception was big for Clinton at the 3:29 mark until half time on a 4th down pass after Chesnee had started to find some rhythm. Red Devil senior Tyreke Watts tormented Chesnee quarterback Isaiah Ellis all night, keeping the Eagle offense in check. At the 9:08 mark of the 3rd quarter, Copeland's TD run was taken off the board by a block in the back penalty. Donte Reeder got the points back on a short scoring pass with 7:12 left in the 3rd quarter. Koko Richey ran in a Clinton score, and Wise scored again against a very tired Chesnee defense to give Clinton a 40-0 lead.
Tyshymen Boyd took a scoop and score into the Chesnee end zone with 2:15 left in the 3rd quarter. Webb told the Laurens County Touchdown Club earlier Friday that as the weather cools, Clinton fans could be seeing Boyd some in the offensive backfield. He showed off running back moves as he scooped up a Chesnee fumble and motored into the endzone for a 47-0 Clinton lead (the second scoop and score for the Devils this season). Chesnee scored twice - after a blocked punt, Ellis threw 20 yards to Jahmarie Phillips in the Clinton end zone and Ellis went in on a 2-yard plunge to end the scoring.
For Clinton, Holmes ran 30 times for 162 yards. Wise added 107 yards on 8 carries. "This win gave us the confidence we so desperately needed," Webb said. "Executing early on really helped us."
