Clinton coach resigns

Jo Webb leaves coaching positions immediately
I am resigning from my position as head volleyball coach and JV girls basketball coach effective immediately. I have enjoyed my 41 years as a coach in this district but due to philosophical differences, I do not feel that I can continue to coach my teams on the level of high expectations that I have been accustomed to. I will always be grateful to have had the opportunity to coach at Clinton High School and the relationships that were formed. I truly want nothing but the best for Red Devil athletics.” - Jo Webb statement

Jo Webb has resigned, effective immediately, from her volleyball and basketball coaching duties at Clinton High School.

She was replaced Thursday night for the varsity volleyball game by CHS Athletics Director Nickie Templeton. Webb said the resignation is due to "philosophical differences." She coached volleyball Wednesday night at South Pointe against her daughter. Webb coached 37 years at Clinton High and 4 years at Martha Dendy.

On Wednesday, Sept. 14, one week from today, there will be a very special opportunity for the Webb family.

Jo Webb, head coach of the Clinton High Volleyball Team, will be facing off against her daughter, Heather Webb, head coach of the Butler (N.C.) High School Volleyball Team.

It will be part of a tri-match at South Pointe High School in Rock Hill. Each team will have the opportunity to face off against one another, totaling two games for each team that night.

When asked about her excitement for the upcoming game, Heather Webb replied, “I am really excited to be playing my mom and my alma mater.  My mom taught me a lot about the game.”

Jo Webb said, “It is exciting to have this opportunity to go head to head. Not too many people can say they have coached their daughter and coached against their daughter.”

Both Webbs understand that they need to treat this like any other game, but at the same time, they both understand how this game is special.

“My girls also know that this game is really special to me and to our program”, says Heather Webb.

Jo Webb stated, “We will go into this tri-match with the same mindset as all of the others. However, we will talk about the fact that Heather is the coach and my team will definitely know what is at stake here.”

When asked who would win the big game, both Webbs slyly replied, “A Webb.” Both noted that a win for their respected program is always nice though. We’ll see which Webb triumphs.

UPDATE: Clinton lost its matches to Butler and South Pointe in the tri-match Sept. 14, and won its match against Mid-Carolina (region) Sept. 15. The next match is Tuesday at Newberry (region).
