POLITICAL/CONGRESS: Democratic Challenger Mary Geren Says She Raises Twice as Much in Individual Contribution Fundraising Over Rep. Jeff Duncan
Anderson - Democratic Challenger Mary Geren raised more than twice as much in individual contributions over Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC 3rd-Laurens County) during 2018’s first quarter of campaign fundraising.
Geren brought in $49,221.76 from individual donors while Duncan only brought in $22,930 from individual donors during the same fundraising cycle.
A Geren news release issued today says, “Continuing his trend of being a bought-and-paid-for politician, Jeff Duncan accepted an additional $89,530 from Corporate PACs and Special Interest Groups.
“These special interest dollars included $1,000 from the National Rifle Association (NRA) on the same day that he advocated for the NRA on social media in the wake of the school massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and the March for our Lives movement; while ignoring calls from constituents for a public town hall meeting on school safety and gun violence.
“He took another $1,000 from Facebook less than two weeks before Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified before Jeff Duncan and the House Subcommittee on Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection. Perhaps this is why Duncan spent his allocated question time during the hearings asking Zuckerberg about conspiracy theories and seeking theatrical photo-ops instead of asking pointed questions about the serious data breach by Cambridge Analytica which resulted in the sharing of more than 87 Million Facebook users’ personal data and information.”
These fundraising filings shows the direction this race is taking and that this race is much more competitive than traditional political pundits from South Carolina would have predicted. The release says, “Mary Geren is connecting with voters of SC-3; speaking out for the middle-class on issues ranging from healthcare costs, jobs, education funding, infrastructure, and school safety; and fighting to bring a true representative of the people back to Washington while Jeff Duncan continues to focus on raising Corporate PAC money and selling his votes in Congress to the highest bidder. Mary Geren is ready to actually ‘drain the swamp’, send a corrupt politician home in November, and finally bring honor, decency, and sanity back to Washington D.C.”
