NATION: Giffords Endorses Mary Geren for Congress
Anderson — Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ gun safety organization, Giffords, has endorsed Mary Geren’s campaign for Congress in South Carolina’s Third Congressional District.
"Politicians bought and paid for by the gun lobby to defend the firearms industry can no longer get away with saying thoughts and prayers and then staying silent. They can no longer say acts of violence are acts of nature, beyond our control. They are not, and the American people know it. They’re tired of politicians who claim to represent them failing to take action to keep them safe. This year, voters are demanding leaders with the courage to fight for a nation where gun violence is not a daily problem,” said former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, co-founder of Giffords. “Voters are ready to elect leaders, like Mary Geren, who will always put protecting the safety of our communities first, not themselves, and certainly not the gun lobby. Mary has what it takes to take on the biggest challenges and fight for solutions that will keep our schools, streets, churches and communities safe. Giffords is proud to endorse Mary Geren for Congress, because she’s a leader with the courage stand up to the corporate gun lobby and someone who will never stop working to make South Carolina’s communities safer.”
Giffords represented the 8th District of Arizona in Congress from 2006 to 2012. In 2011, she was shot, in an assassination attempt, while meeting with constituents. She and her husband, Captain Mark Kelly, founded Giffords (originally named Americans for Responsible Solutions) in 2012, with the mission of saving lives from gun violence. The goal of the #VoteCourage campaign is to elect gun safety advocates and defeat elected officials who have opposed common sense gun reform. Geren’s opponent, Jeff Duncan, has consistently voted against popular gun reform bills, while pushing the gun lobby’s agenda.
“I am honored to be endorsed by one of my all-time sheroes, Congresswoman Gabby Giffords,” said Geren. “Gabby is the most courageous person I have ever met. No assassin’s bullet or naysayer will ever stand in the way of her fight for justice. Thank you, Gabrielle Giffords. I stand on your shoulders and am most humbled by your support.”
Geren has also been named a Moms Demand Action “Gun Sense Candidate.” She supports universal background checks on potential gun owners, as well as a ban on high-capacity magazines and bump stocks.
