Letter: The American Legion Auxiliary Says "Thank You"
I am writing this on behalf of the American Legion Auxiliary and myself. I have been president for the past 20 years and am 92 years old.
All of the ladies in the Auxiliary have almost caught up with me, some have passed me, so you can see why we can’t continue. No one has come forward to take over, but we have accomplished a lot.
The one that we are most proud of is the “Veterans Monument” in downtown Clinton. We dedicated it in 2007 and gave it to Clinton. It was designed by Randy Martin. On the past 10 years, we have put on Memorial Day programs, honoring our veterans. We thank all the citizens who supported us along with the city of Clinton’s Dianne Wyatt, who helped us get started, the city of Clinton for allowing us to give these programs, many people were a big part of this and I want to thank the city of Clinton Police and Fire Department, my son’s law office, Peggy Goodman, Joe at L & L Office Supply, V.F.W. Auxiliary, Clinton High School JROTC, all the people who took part in the program, the special music, the ladies of the auxiliary who baked all the cookies, Ingles and Dempsey’s, also the help of my companion, Charleen Benjamin.
Each year, we were obligated to sponsor “Girl’s State.” We have sent hundreds of girls including Thornwell High School when it was open.
When the new Clinton High School needed help to landscape their campus, we helped raise money for the “Noble Trees” which were planted to honor our veterans. Clinton High also put on a Veteran’s Day program to honor veterans; we always gave an Americanism award to a cadet.
We have placed flags at different schools and gave Boy Scout Troop 111 a flagpole and flag and helped them with some scouting equipment. In the past few years we have helped “Meals on Wheels” with their Christmas bags for shut-ins.
The distribution of poppies is a May project of the auxiliary. We raise money that go to Columbia to help veterans and their families for years with aid, money, etc. We have a family here in Clinton that we have been helping for a few years.
We support vet dogs and Red Cross.
I feel we have done a lot and we will miss our mission. I hope Clinton will continue to honor our veterans and take care of the Veterans Monument.
Thanks to all of you,
