Blue Hose softball sweeps doubleheader from Winthrop
PC softball, which improved to 17-12 overall and 3-2 in the league, is off this coming weekend for Easter.

The Presbyterian College softball team used solid pitching and defense to take the doubleheader sweep over Winthrop in Big South action Wednesday afternoon at the PC softball complex in Clinton. The Blue Hose took the 2-0 shutout in game one before surviving a late-inning rally for the 3-2 win in game two.

Game One: PC 2, WIN 0

A pitching and defensive duel for most of the first game, both pitchers surrendered just five hits, while striking out four.  The Blue Hose finished with 21 putouts, with the Eagles posting 18.  Each team had just one error apiece.

Kiley Majette, who took the loss for Winthrop (5-8), faced 27 batters, retiring the side in two innings and allowed just one runner in two others.

Sydney Seigler, who didn't give up a walk, picked up the win for PC (5-6) after forcing three 1-2-3 innings, including in the top of the seventh where she struck out one and had the others ground out and fly out.

A home run by Hope Rogers, her ninth of the season, put the Blue Hose up 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth.  The game's only other run came off a RBI single from Jordan Ashley in the bottom of the sixth.  She drove in Jenna Harris, who had reached on a fielder's choice, with the play being made at home to tag out Megan Anderson, who was on off a double to open the inning.

Megan Winningham led the Eagles with a three-for-three effort.  Five different Blue Hose posted a hit apiece, with Rogers and Ashley recording a RBI each.

Game Two: PC 3, WIN 2

Much of the same in the second game as in the first, it was a one-run game through the fourth inning, the lone run off a RBI single from Harris, who plated Rogers after she opened the second inning with a single.

After a 1-2-3 inning in the first for Winthrop, the Eagles rallied in the second with a double, a single, and hit-by-pitch to load the bases with two outs.  It was for naught as the next batter grounded out to end the threat and inning.

Winthrop put two runners on in the top of the fifth off two singles, but Blaire Miller caught a line drive and dove back to first for an inning-ending double-play.

The Blue Hose led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk and a single, with pinch runner Jonnie Petree reaching third on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch would send her home to make it 2-0.  An Anderson RBI single would plate Ruff two batters later to give the Blue Hose the 3-0 lead headed to the sixth.

Winningham singled to open the sixth but back to back foul outs and a ground out to third inning stranded her.  After an up and down inning for PC in the bottom of the inning, the Eagles put runners in scoring position off two singles.  With two outs on the board, Leah Young laced a double to left center to make it a 3-2 game.  That would be it as the next batter flied out to end the rally and game.

Chace Helms started for Winthrop, going 4.0 innings and giving up three earned runs off four hits to move to (0-7) on the season.

Katie Brown picked up the win (9-5), giving up two runs and 10 hits with two strikeouts.   The Eagles had the only error of the game.

PC posted five hits, with Anderson and Harris recording a RBI apiece.  Winthrop came away with 10 hits, with Morgan Lowers, Paige Haley, Winningham, and Shayna Covington each collecting two hits each.  Young had one hit and two RBI.

Five Blue Hose collected hits, with Anderson and Harris coming away with a RBI apiece.

PC, which improved to 17-12 overall and 3-2 in the league, is off this coming weekend for Easter, but returns to action Tuesday, Mar. 29, with a 3 p.m., doubleheader at Western Carolina.  It is the beginning of a seven-game road trip with the Blue Hose heading up to Campbell for a three-game set April 1-2.  Winthrop drops to 10-22, 0-5.

Game One: A home run by Hope Rogers, her ninth of the season, put the Blue Hose up 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth. The game's only other run came off a RBI single from Jordan Ashley in the bottom of the sixth.
