LETTER: Support Girls State - Empowering Young Women

The Editor,

To make more than 20,000 high school girls politically aware of the ballet box and the importance of self-government is no small task, but is one that the American Legion Auxiliary has undertaken for more than 70 years. Our Palmetto Girls State is sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary of South Carolina.

This is the 72nd year of Palmetto Girls State. It will be held on the campus of Presbyterian College, Clinton, SC during the week of June 10-16, 2018.

Local delegates that are selected to go to Palmetto Girls State are sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary, Post 56, Clinton, SC. They are recommended by their local school personnel. Eligibility of delegates limited to girls who have completed their Junior year of high school. An application for and an essay on why they want to go to Palmetto Girls Sate are required. These are sent to and reviewed by our Auxiliary chairperson.

Clinton High School is allotted 4 openings. Our committee reviews the applications and selects 4 delegates and 4 alternates. Delegates are selected by these qualifications or characteristics:

Leadership ability, 2) interest in government, 3) maturity, 4) character, 5) scholarships, 6) cooperativeness, and 7) desire to attend Palmetto Girls State.

The week is a strenuous one. Good health, emotional stamina, and maturity are important. The girls follow a strict schedule and abide by the rules of the program, and they must follow and adhere to a dress code.

It is an honor to be selected as a delegate to Palmetto Girls State. The girls who attend are some of South Carolina’s and also America’s brightest and most talented girls. Today’s delegates at Palmetto Girls State will be tomorrow’s citizens and leaders in our state and nation.

Palmetto Girls State is not a camp or a vacation, nor is it an award for scholastic achievement. It is a practical application of Americanism and good citizenship. Each attendee must make a serious commitment to be involved and participate in the week.

The program operates under the principles of the American Legion Auxiliary including the observance of “For God and Country” and all delegates are expected to participate in all aspects of the program. It is a nonpartisan, nonpolitical attempt to teach and introduce government to our youth through a practical application of government. It is an honor and is a once in a lifetime experience to attend Palmetto Girls State.
