Person killed at dragway
Authorities are reporting at least one fatality tonight at the Ware Shoals Dragway.
A vehicle and debris flew into the crowd, and at least one person is dead, another seriously injured and a 3-year-old who was pushed out of the way of flying debris was airlifted for treatment. People were fighting at the dragway, which is in Laurens County, as competition went on. Racing continued Saturday night, a report said.
The person who died was the driver of a vehicle that left the track and crashed into other vehicles. That driver has been identified as Anthony Craig Owens, 38, of Easley.
In a separate wreck today, authorities identified the victim of a single vehicle crash as David Stanley Kernell, 61, of Laurens. He was killed and another person was seriously injured when the 1970 Chevy Nova Kernel was driving left the road, hit small trees and collided with a large tree. The vehicle caught fire, and Kernel was trapped inside.
The passenger was airlifted to a regional hospital for treatment.
