Hit and run driver arrested
UPDATED: Laurens Police Chief Sonny Ledda reports on Facebook today authorities have arrested a suspect for hit and run in a Laurens wreck Saturday.
The wreck caused serious injuries to Laurens County Council Vice-Chairman Keith Tollison, an avid motorcycle rider. He was hit about 7 pm Saturday in Laurens, and released from a hospital Sunday morning. Ledda said officers, especially Delta Shift, showed "determination and professionalism" in identifying the suspect. Originally, it was reported the suspect left the scene.
A later report updated that information - the suspect drove her vehicle into a nearby parking lot. Authorities said Nancy Danielle Speaks, 33, of Clinton, was arrested and charged with driving under suspension 3rd offense, failure to yield the right of way, and a vehicle license violation, and was released from custody Sunday afternoon.
The wreck happened at the N Harper St intersection of US 76 bypass/Hwy 221 in Laurens, near a McDonalds. A woman ran the red light in her vehicle, the report said. The force of the crash caused Tollison to fly over the hood of the woman's car. Two other women stopped, called 911 and stayed with Tollison until help arrived, said Tollison's daughter, Jennifer Garrett. Tollison gave the women his cellphone and asked that they call his daughter.
Tollison, who has ridden in Christmas for Kids charity motorcycle rides sponsored by the Laurens County Sheriff's Office, has several injuries - broken wrist, foot and ribs, road rash on his face, and cuts that required stitches above his eye. He did not have internal bleeding, a report said.
